The Park, Hyderabad

May 4, 2010

Hyderabad’s proud heritage as a centre for design and the production of precious stones and gems greatly influenced the new Park Hotel in Hyderabad. The building’s inspired futuristic façade designed to optimize day-light, is said to be meticulously designed to emulate the metalwork found in the Nizam’s jewellery collection, one of the most valuable and precious in the world.

The Park, designed by architecture and interior design firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), integrates sustainable features and is GOLD CERTIFIED by LEED.

A major feature of the hotel is promised to be a “three-dimensional” horizon pool, with a stair tube connecting the hotels night club to The Veranda through the volume of the pool. The pool provides a spectacular view of the city and is lined by Dedon outdoor seating.

While we feel that the inspired futuristic elevation and room interiors, are chic for the boutique property designed to be the ultimate in luxury, we do think that the Hyderbad-inspired bits seem  kitsch, literal, loud and  not refined enough and definitely clash with the squeaky clean futuristic lines, making a not so pleasant combination. The hotel seems to be a confused pastiche of many contradicting elements as a whole.

However, given some design elements and factors, that it is a Design hotel is hard not to notice. It is a  bold statement and may soon become a landmark hotel in the city of Hyderabad.
