Design Objects: Pepper Mill

July 1, 2010

A pepper mill has become  a quintessential object in home and restaurant kitchens.

So, we thought of introducing‘Design Objects’ series with tracing the evolution of this handy tool that lends the fresh grainy flavour to most of our food.

Peugeot of France created the pepper grinder in 1842. The mechanism of case hardened steel cracks the peppercorns before the actual grinding process. The grooves on the Peugeot mechanism are individually cut into the metal and then case hardened, making them virtually indestructible.

From exposed lever system, the pepper mill was refined to suit elegant forms like the ones above in porcelain.

The Manual burr grinders are turned by hand, rotating one grinding surface against the other. Alessi has worked on inetersting looking pepper grinders like the ones above.

Post the manual grinders that usually work by rotating the top part, now the grinder has evolved into an automatic versions like the ones below, that work use a switch to move the grinders. A combination of mechanisms unlike just rotation is now used.

The Rabbit pepper grinder above is a great looking one hand tool and is the latest and most convenient version of the pepper mill.
